Transforming The World With Robots

Gone are the days when robots used to be a thing of the future. Robots are already transforming the world by helping humans do things more efficiently and at a much faster rate. Be it manufacturing, agriculture, lifestyle, education, rescue operations, healthcare, space, businesses, underwater exploration, or defense, robots are everywhere.

They are already doing a lot of complex tasks and are evolving every second. Robots are now so integrated into our environment that it is now difficult to think of a life without robots.

Why robots?

Robots are fascinating and are in high demand due to several advantages they have over normal human beings. To name a few pros:
  • They can work 24*7
  • They don't need breaks and bonuses or salary.
  • Unlike labor laws, there are no robot laws :p
  • If maintained regularly, they can last for years
  • They are more accurate
  • They have no mood swings
Let us look at some of the major sectors where robots play a critical role.

Agriculture

Robots are actively involved in agriculture. And their presence is only going to increase as the world population increases. Since most of the countries face labor shortages, it is getting difficult to feed the world. Therefore, robots will become a necessity in agriculture. Harvesting, crop monitoring, weeding, and crop seeding are some of the activities that robots can perform.

Farmwise Titan FT-35 is one of the weeding robots and has also been featured in Time's list of best inventions of 2020

Manufacturing

Robots have revolutionized the manufacturing industry. Most of the repetitive tasks have been taken over by robots. Using robots means the process of manufacturing can go on 24*7 without much human intervention. This increase in production also comes with increased speed in production and this increases the profits exponentially.

Assembly line robots are the best example of robots transforming the world. These robots do everything from fitting parts to paintwork.

Healthcare

The healthcare industry is benefitting a lot from robots as these robots take care of the normal tasks and provide health personals with more time and allow them to focus on other important issues. There are robots that can do surgery too. These surgeries are less costly and are more accurate as robots don't get exhausted like humans. Da Vinci robot is one of the most famous surgical robots. It boasts of a 3D vision system and has tiny instruments that can bend at angles far greater than a human hand.

Blood drawing and disinfector robots aka robotic nurses are being developed to check for vital signs of a patient, draw blood and monitor the condition of the patients.

Lifestyle Robots

Lifestyle Robots, in itself, is a broad category of robots. Alexa and Echo are one of the most common lifestyle robots and are a perfect example of how integrated robots are in our everyday lives. Everything with the help of these robots is just a command away. Want to hear for favorite songs, name it, these audio robots will play it for you.

In 2019, Bengaluru had its first robot restaurant. The humanoid robots are being used as waiters and are a joy to watch.

Similarly, there are robots to take care of your cleaning. iRobot Braava Jet is one such robot that takes care of the mopping. Lawnmover robots are something you will need if you have a big lawn. These robots come equipped with various sensors that help them trim the grass without much human intervention. Worx is one such company which has been developing these robots.

Exploration Robots

Humans can't withstand extreme harsh environment/climate. And that's why we've been using exploration robots for places that are not accessible or hazardous for humans. Be it underwater exploration or space exploration, exploration robots can go anywhere. Dextre and Voyager are some of the famous exploration robots.

The Other Side of the Coin

Even though robots can withstand extreme climate, work 24*7, give accurate and fast results but there is always the other side that we need to consider.

Robots are expensive. There are huge investments needed before using robots on a massive scale. They need proper maintenance which can again add to the expenses.

Robots take away jobs. They create new jobs for skilled laborers but take away most of the repetitive jobs. Unskilled laborers have to pay the price for this.

Continuous technological developments are being done to improve the robots. With the advancement in technology, we can expect cheaper robots to enter the market. Today's robots are more industry focused. But with time we will have more and more personal robots coming into the picture. And a few years from now, we might even have human lookalike robots.
