Learning "The Art of Tackling Problems of GATE Exam" (for Mechanical Engineering Stream students)

[GATE: Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering]

Over the past 5 years, in addition to admission into colleges for M.Tech., with more and more PSU's opening their gates wide open for recruitment of Engineer Trainees and Management trainees through the GATE exam, it has become crucial for students to qualify the exam with proper marks based on their goal.

PRESENT COURSE OVERVIEW:

Never like before, The Engineer's Gurukulam will conduct one week training classes for students from Mechanical engineering stream, where students will be introduced to various "to be noted things about GATE exam". Apart from this, 4 subjects are selected. Each subject will be dealt for one or two days as per scheduled in later part of this post. In each of these subjects, 10-15 typical previous year GATE problems with overview of related concepts and ways of tackling such questions will be explained briefly.

E-Waste Causes, Effects and Management at a glance

Let's consider few scenarios -

Gayatri: Hubby!!! I wish you present me a I-Phone 8 plus cellular phone this anniversary. My Samsung Galaxy S6 got old.

Ravi: What a picture quality!!!. I will definitely gift this 51" Flat-screen LED television to my mom on this Mother's Day. She has been using the 3 year old 21" LCD TV set.

Raju: Dad! please buy me a DSLR camera. You know that photography is my passion. This point and shoot camera do not have sufficient features.

Nik: Hey Kiran! I have bought Lenovo Yoga 3 Tab. It has awesome features and not like the old version.

So by now you might have understood what I am pointing at. Yes!!! The electronic gadgets and their purchase.

It's true that electronic gadgets have revolutionized and taken our life standards to next level. We have to agree that, these products of hybrid engineering or simply mechatronics have become a necessity and life is felt to be lifeless without these tools.

Economies which tapped immense market potential of these products decades ago by manufacturing and selling them, bulged by several times take them to top order and making them powerful and influential over period. Best examples are America, China, Japan, Germany etc.

Anyway, coming to our main theme, we have to note that a day will come when the same electronic gadgets we are using today including the laptop I am using to publish this post/article will become 100% depreciated and have to be disposed off. There arises the main issue. How to dispose it? Can I just throw it in the Garbage/ Trash Cans? If not Why? How will Disposal of such gadgets affect the environment? Is this a point to be worried upon? Are there alternate ways of disposal?

Answers for these questions constitute the theme of our present post.

Can you do it...??? (Part 5: Tricky GATE/PSU questions)

The 4 minute video briefs on total 4 PSU level questions for Mechanical Engineering Discipline.
The questions are from Thermodynamics, Vibrations and Quantitative Aptitude.

The Mars Man

A zeal to achieve and a proper vision holds the potential to do what a common man calls miracle. Here is tale of a well established entrepreneur - Elon Musk. He has set an example and inspiration for a common man born in a normal family.  Hope the readers of this article goes through it and like excerpts of his life.

On June 28, 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa The upcoming inspirational entrepreneur who was named as Elon Musk was born to the couple - Maye Musk (a model and dietitian from Canada) and Errol Musk ( a South African electro-mechanical engineer).

Quantitative Aptitude (Lecture -2)

Topics Covered in the last session:
1. Classification of Number System,
2. Types of Natural Numbers
3. Divisibility Rule
4. Priority order of Mathematical operators

The 23 Min Video below elaborates :
1. To check whether a given number N is prime or not
2. Concepts of LCM and HCF
3. A briefing on Fractions and its types
4. Concept of recurring decimal numbers
5. Few examples to be solved by viewers....

Introduction to Quantitative Aptitude (Quantitative Aptitude: Part 1)

Quantitative Aptitude is simply application of high school mathematics and common sense.

Even though concept is known to many the same question is done in 3-4 minutes by some and within 1 minute by some other. Such a disparity of performance makes one topper and puts others on trailing side. Reasons of disparity obviously known to all.

Hope students will enjoy these series...

To get edge on others we can handle this course in 3 phases.

  1. in-order to induce attachment and flow towards math, recapitulate 5-7th classes math (such as multiplication tables, number systems, mathematical operations etc.) (This phase may take around 6-7 hours)
  2. since in most of the competitive exams, around  10-12 topics in  all are touched upon in quantitative aptitude, we go through each topic one by one starting from number system and series and for each topic, along with understanding required formulas do some examples (say some 10-15 examples) (This phase may take 20-25 hours)
  3. Once we are clear with all topics and understand approach to be followed for solving the problems in competitive exams, we start revising each concept with a practice of 30 problems at a time keeping target of completing them correctly in 30 minutes. We continue this practice of solving 30 set problem till we reach goal.
Phases 1 and 3 are to be fulfilled by students themselves (the only way to shun away fear and impart love for mathematics). Role of a teacher lies in fulfilling phase 2.

Hope students will enjoy these series...

Concept of Temperature (Thermodynamics Part-2)

The content of the 25 minutes video covers
1.  an example of pressure calculation from readings of U-tube manometer
2. Zeroth Law of thermodynamics
3. Methods of Temperature measurement
4. Why Gas is standard thermometric substance?

Thermodynamics (Lecture-1)

Thermodynamics is science of energy transfer and its effect on the physical properties of substances.

The applications of Thermodynamic laws and principles are found in all fields of energy
technology , Notably in steam and nuclear power plants, internal combustion engines, gas
turbines, air conditioning and refrigeration etc.
